Serum ascites albumin gradient (SAAG) is a test used to differentiate between causes of ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen). SAAG is calculated by subtracting the ascitic fluid albumin level from the serum albumin level. A SAAG value greater than or equal to 1.1 gdL indicates portal hypertension, while a SAAG value less than 1.1 gdL indicates non-portal hypertension causes of ascites. The test is performed by analyzing serum and ascitic fluid samples obtained through a needle aspiration of the abdomen.
