What is the most dangerous situation in Diabetes?

Excessively high blood sugar (> 250), may lead to a situation called Diabetic Ketoacidosis, which is a life-threatening event. This needs urgent medical attention, and almost always insulin to be administered to the patient.

What is Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)?

Diabeteic Ketoacidosis is a situation in which the body is unable to utilize glucose for energy and instead starts to use alternative sources. This leads to a spike in blood sugar, and also sudden changes in electrolyte levels.


DKA is caused by infections, failure to take medications, or any sudden stress. Drug addicts may precipitate DKA by taking excess cocaine. THe risk also increases in pregnancy if the mother is diabetic.


The symptoms include nausea, vomitting, delirium, irritability, shallowness of breath, the patient's breath may smell fruity.

Emergency Signs

These indicate need for immediate admission to hospital Critical Care. Very high pulse rate, confusion or severe stomach pain are all emergency signs.
