My insulin levels are normal, does it mean that I don't have Diabetes?
Insulin levels may be normal or even raised in patients of Type 2 Diabetes (the most common form, seen in adults). Insulin levels are low only in early onset diabetes (appears below 40 years of age).
What is early onset or Type 1 Diabetes?
Early onset diabetes appears before 40 years of age. These patients need insulin as their insulin levels are low.
Common Signs
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus patients are usually not obese, or overweight. They are young (< 40).
Overeating
These patients tend to eat excessively
Water
They may also drink a lot of water
Urination
They will visit the bathroom very often and tend to urinate very commonly.
What is type 2 Diabetes?
Type 2 DIabetes is the most common form of adult onset diabetes (>40 years). Patient insulin levels may be normal or even higher than normal.
Symptoms
Type 2 Diabetes patients will show a group of symptoms like being overweight (skinny-fat), high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.
Tests
Glycated Hemoglobin > 6.5 OR 2-hour post meal glucose above 200 are the basic criteria for diagnosing Type2 DM, combined with a normal or high insulin level.
