What is an Allergy?

An allergy is when the immune system overreacts to a normally harmless substance — an allergen — such as a food, pollen, dust mite or pet dander. The body makes IgE antibodies against the allergen, which trigger sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itching, rashes, swelling, wheezing or, rarely, a severe whole-body reaction. Testing identifies exactly which allergens you react to, so they can be avoided or treated.

Top 6 early warning signs of allergy - sneezing, rash, bloating, diarrhoea, weight loss

When Should You Get Tested for Allergy?

Consider an allergy test if you have:

  • Recurrent sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, or allergic rhinitis:
  • Asthma, wheezing or a persistent cough that worsens seasonally or indoors:
  • Skin problems — eczema, hives (urticaria) or unexplained itching:
  • Reactions after eating certain foods (rash, swelling, stomach upset):
  • Swelling of the lips, eyes or face after exposure to something:
  • A family history of allergy, asthma or eczema:

How Are Allergies Diagnosed?

There are two main ways to test for allergy:

  • Blood test (allergen-specific IgE):A single blood sample measures the IgE antibodies your body makes against each allergen, plus your total IgE and eosinophil count. It is safe, needs no stopping of antihistamines, and can screen many allergens at once — this is what Pathofast offers.
  • Skin prick / patch tests:Tiny amounts of allergen are placed on or just under the skin and the reaction is read after a set time. These are done by an allergist or dermatologist in a clinic.

Blood Tests for Allergy

An allergy blood test checks the IgE antibodies your body produces against specific allergens, along with your total IgE and eosinophil count. It is the safest and most convenient way to test, especially for children and anyone who cannot stop antihistamines for a skin test.

CBC — Absolute Eosinophil Count

A simple, low-cost CBC (Complete Blood Count) (Rs.160) measures your absolute eosinophil count — a type of white blood cell that rises in allergy and parasitic infection. A raised eosinophil count is a useful first pointer towards an allergic tendency.

Total IgE Level

Total IgE measures the overall level of allergy antibodies in your blood. A raised total IgE suggests an allergic tendency, though it does not say what you are allergic to. At Pathofast, Total IgE is included in every allergen panel below.

Specific Allergen Tests (IgE Panels)

These identify the exact allergens you react to. Pathofast offers:

Tests for Food Allergy

If you react to certain foods, a food allergen panel pinpoints exactly which ones. Each panel also includes Total IgE and an Absolute Eosinophil Count.

Veg Food Allergen Panel — Rs.8900

What is it: a blood test that checks your IgE reaction to 14 common vegetarian foods in one go. Book the Veg Food Allergen Panel

What it tests: Aubergine/eggplant (brinjal), Banana, Chick Pea, Gluten, Lemon, Lentil, Milk, Orange, Papaya, Peanut, Pineapple, Rice, Soyabean, Tomato and Wheat — plus Total IgE and Absolute Eosinophil Count.

How long it takes: Reports are usually ready in 3–4 working days.

What the results mean: A raised allergen-specific IgE means your body is sensitised to that allergen — the higher the level, the stronger the sensitisation. Results are graded, and should always be read alongside your symptoms by your doctor.

Non-Veg Food Allergen Panel — Rs.7400

What is it: a blood test that checks your IgE reaction to 10 common non-vegetarian foods. Book the Non-Veg Food Allergen Panel

What it tests: Chicken, Crab, Lobster, Shrimp (prawns), Egg white, Egg yolk, Fish (cod), Salmon, Tuna and Milk — plus Total IgE and Absolute Eosinophil Count.

How long it takes: Reports are usually ready in 3–4 working days.

What the results mean: A raised allergen-specific IgE means your body is sensitised to that allergen — the higher the level, the stronger the sensitisation. Results are graded, and should always be read alongside your symptoms by your doctor.

Combined Veg & Non-Veg Food Panel — Rs.11900

The Combined Food Panel is simply a combination of the veg and non-veg food panels — it covers all of the vegetarian and non-vegetarian food allergens above (plus Total IgE and eosinophils) in a single test, and is the best choice when you are not sure whether a veg or non-veg food is the trigger.

Individual Food Allergen Tests

If you suspect a single food, individual allergen-specific IgE tests are available too — for example milk, wheat, peanut, egg or soya. Browse all allergy tests to book a single allergen.

Tests for Allergens in the Air (Respiratory Allergy)

Airborne allergens cause sneezing, a blocked nose, watery eyes, cough and asthma. A respiratory allergen panel finds which ones affect you.

Respiratory / Asthma Allergen Panel — Rs.9400

What is it: a blood test that checks your IgE reaction to 17 common airborne allergens. Book the Respiratory Allergen Panel

What it tests: house dust mite (Dermatophagoides farinae), cat epithelium & dander, dog dander, cockroach, Aspergillus fumigatus, Alternaria alternata, and pollens/grasses including Bermuda grass (durva), Johnson grass, meadow grass, ragweed/Parthenium (congress grass), pigweed/Amaranthus, saltwort, birch, acacia, eucalyptus, mesquite and elm/holoptelea — plus Total IgE and Absolute Eosinophil Count.

How long it takes: Reports are usually ready in 3–4 working days.

What the results mean: A raised allergen-specific IgE means your body is sensitised to that allergen — the higher the level, the stronger the sensitisation. Results are graded, and should always be read alongside your symptoms by your doctor.

Allergy vs Intolerance — What's the Difference?

People often confuse a food allergy with a food intolerance, but they are very different. An allergy is an immune-system reaction (driven by IgE antibodies) that can be immediate and, rarely, life-threatening. An intolerance — such as lactose intolerance — is a digestive problem that causes discomfort but is not dangerous. Allergy tests measure IgE; intolerance is usually worked out with an elimination diet.

Allergy vs Intolerance: at a glance
