Cancer is a disease in which cells in one part of the body grow out of control and can spread to other organs. There are many types, each named after the organ where it starts — such as breast, prostate, cervical, colon or liver cancer. Cancer is far more treatable when found early, which is why screening and timely testing matter.
Most cancer tests are simple blood tests. They check the level of certain substances in the blood, called tumour markers. The body or a tumour releases these substances, and their level often increases when cancer is present. A cancer blood test measures these markers to help screen for cancer, monitor treatment and check for recurrence — alongside scans and a biopsy where needed.
| Cancer | Blood Test(s) to Diagnose / Monitor |
|---|---|
| Prostate | PSA (total & free) |
| Breast | CA 15-3, HER2-neu |
| Ovarian | CA-125, ROMA / HE4 |
| Colorectal | CEA (+ stool occult blood) |
| Pancreatic / Biliary | CA 19-9 |
| Stomach | CA 72-4, CA 19-9 |
| Liver | AFP |
| Lung | Cyfra 21-1, CEA |
| Testicular / germ cell | Beta hCG, AFP |
| Neuroendocrine | Chromogranin A |
Speak to a doctor about cancer testing if you notice any of these persistent, unexplained symptoms:
For women, breast, cervical and ovarian cancers are the most common. Choose a ready-made screening profile, or book the individual tests below.
| Organ | Test | Normal Level |
|---|---|---|
| Breast | CA 15-3 | < 30 U/mL |
| Breast | HER2-neu (serum) | < 15 ng/mL |
| Ovary | CA-125 | < 35 U/mL |
| Ovary | ROMA / HE4 | Risk-based (below method cut-off) |
| Cervix | HPV | Negative for high-risk HPV |
Reference values shown are indicative and may vary with the testing method — your report always shows the exact normal range used.
The single most important cancer test for men is the PSA test for prostate cancer, best done as the combined Prostate Profile.
| Organ | Test | Normal Level |
|---|---|---|
| Prostate | Total PSA | < 4 ng/mL |
| Prostate | Free PSA | Free:total ratio > 25% |
| Prostate | Prostate Profile | Total + Free PSA |
| Prostate | Acid Phosphatase | < 6.5 U/L |
Reference values shown are indicative and may vary with the testing method — your report always shows the exact normal range used.
After the age of 50, the risk of colorectal, stomach and liver cancers rises for both men and women. These panels screen for the common gastrointestinal and liver cancers and are a sensible addition to a yearly check-up.
Cancer testing combines simple blood tests, imaging scans and, where needed, a tissue sample. Here is what each involves.
How it's done: a single blood sample, drawn at our Camp lab or at your home. Preparation: most tumour markers need no fasting; for a PSA test avoid ejaculation and vigorous cycling for 48 hours, and for a stool occult blood test your doctor may advise a 3-day diet change. Turnaround time: most tumour marker reports are ready the same day or the next day.
Imaging scans are usually advised alongside cancer blood tests and are performed at a radiology/imaging centre. Mammography (breast): a low-dose breast X-ray, no special preparation, takes about 20–30 minutes. Ultrasound (USG) of the abdomen or pelvis: painless; an abdominal scan may need 6 hours of fasting and a pelvic scan a full bladder. CT, MRI and PET-CT are used to stage cancer and check for spread. Turnaround time: imaging reports are usually available the same day.
How it's done: the pathologist inserts a thin needle into a lump (for example in the breast, thyroid or a lymph node) and draws out a few cells for examination. Preparation: none, and no fasting. It takes only a few minutes and causes minimal discomfort. Turnaround time: the report is typically ready in 1–2 days.
A biopsy examined by histopathology is the definitive way to confirm cancer, its exact type and its grade.
Histopathology is the study of tissue under a microscope. A small piece of tissue (a biopsy) or a surgically removed specimen is processed, thinly sectioned, stained and examined by a pathologist to confirm whether cancer is present, identify its type and grade, and guide treatment. At Pathofast every specimen is reported by our in-house pathologist, Dr. Bhargav Raut, MBBS, DCP (Pathology).
We report histopathology and offer a second opinion on biopsies from every major organ. Explore our specimen-specific pages:

Cytology is the study of individual cells, rather than a whole tissue block. FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) uses a fine needle to draw loose cells from a lump for examination. It is quick, minimally invasive and needs no anaesthesia, and it is commonly used to assess lumps in the breast, thyroid, lymph nodes, salivary glands and other superficial swellings — often the first step in deciding whether a lump is benign or cancerous.
