How is urine culture test done?

To do this test, you need to provide a sample of your urine in a sterile container. The sample is then processed in the lab. The test is completely painless. It usually takes 2-5 days for your reports to be ready.

What symptoms need a urine test?

Burning during urination, pain during urination, fever, chills, stomach pain and lower abdominal pain are some symptoms that may mean you need a urine test.

Before the Test

• Fasting : Fasting is not necessary for urine culture.
• Timing : Provide the urine sample at any time.
• Medications - Antibiotics not allowed : You must inform the lab if you are taking any antibiotics before getting this test. Antibiotics affect the results of the test and the test is generally of no use if the patient is already taking antibiotics.

How to Collect Sample

• Clean Area : Clean your external genitalia with a moist cloth or tissue paper, do not use soaps or lotions to clean.
• Mid-Stream Urine Sample : Allow the initial part of the urine to flow, and then collect the 10-15 ml from the mid-stream.
• Cap and Label Container : Cap the container and label it with your name and time of collection.

• Growth Whether the growth is present or not. Normal range is absent
• Identification: If growth was found, which organisms were grown
• Sample Type: Which sample type was this - in this case (urine).
• Colony Count: The total number of bacteria that were found in the sample.

Antibiotic Sensitivity Format

• Antibiotics Tested Commonly tested antibiotic classes include - Fluoroquionolones, Carbapenems, Combination Antibiotics, Cephalosporins and others
• Resistance Pattern: This will include either Susceptible - meaning that the antibiotic is effective against this organisms, or Resistant - meaning the organisms cannot be treated with this antibiotic
• MIC: The report optionally includes the concentration of the antibiotic used to test resistance in the organisms.
